Traffic Control Person

A Traffic Control Person (TCP), also known as a flagger, is a trained individual responsible for directing and managing vehicle and pedestrian traffic through construction zones, accident sites, or other temporary traffic disruption areas to ensure the safety of workers, drivers, and the general public.

1st Nation Traffic Control Person manages traffic flow and ensures safety at work zones or road construction sites. Our traffic control person use hand signals, signs, and communication equipment to direct vehicles and pedestrians safely around hazards. TCPs work in coordination with construction crews, police, and emergency responders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up, maintain, and remove temporary traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barriers.

  • Direct traffic using stop/slow paddles or flags, according to approved traffic control plans.

  • Communicate effectively with other traffic control personnel and site supervisors using hand signals or two-way radios.

  • Monitor traffic patterns and adjust control methods to prevent congestion and accidents.

  • Ensure pedestrian safety and access around or through the work area.

  • Follow and enforce safety regulations, including those outlined in relevant government or industry standards.

  • Respond quickly and calmly to emergencies or unexpected changes in traffic conditions.

  • Report any incidents or unsafe conditions to the supervisor or site safety officer.

Working Conditions:

  • Our traffic person(s) can work outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow).

  • Exposure to traffic noise, dust, and sometimes hazardous situations.

  • Typically requires wearing high-visibility PPE (personal protective equipment). Must have a valid

    Traffic Control Person Certification

  • Completion of workplace safety training (e.g., WHMIS, first aid, etc.).

  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and stand for extended periods.

  • Good eyesight, hearing, and physical stamina.

  • Strong communication and situational awareness skills.

  • Reliability, punctuality, and ability to follow instructions precisely.
